I have been slowly finding my way around Google+ for the past several weeks, setting up my circles, finding friends, trying to figure out some of its features.
I see a great deal of potential with it. It certainly improves upon the facebook model. It includes much of the best functionality of Linkedin. You can tweet on it, targeting as narrowly or broadly as you wish. It's great for posting photos. All it really needs is a lot more people to join.
One of the features that caused a bit of confusion early on (I saws several internet posts about it) is its +1 button. You see these already included in site tools adjoining articles all over the web. I think many early adopters, including me, instinctively believed that clicking on that button would post a link to the article on your G+ homepage, thus sharing it with your friends in the same manner that you would with Twitter, Linkedin, FB, etc.
It doesn't do that.
I think it does something better.
Instead of posting it on your homepage where it would slowly move down the page as more posts are made, eventually getting lost, G+ has a page that archives all the links you've tagged with the +1 button.
If you go to my Google+ profile page, you'll see a button for +1 right near the top. Click on that and you will see all of the articles that I have found interesting enough to tag with the button. This is great for me because I'm keeping them all in one place where I can go back to re-read them and think about them further if and when I wish. I think its great for the people who follow me because they (you) may also find these articles interesting and helpful.
Most of the articles posted on my +1 page are about marketing, new advances, reminders of some important basics, etc. If you are involved in marketing, I invite you to come by and visit the page from time to time to see which articles I've added to the archive. Consider it my online marketing library.
If you are not a member yet but would like to get started, send me an email at nikielpete@gmail.com and I'll send you an invitation to join. You need an invitation from an existing member to join as it is still in its beta phase.
I like this feature. Visit my page and see what I've tagged. And I'll visit yours as well.
